Footballer Lionel Messi dedicated Argentina's victory over England in the World Cup semifinals to the fans of the national team.
Messi said the legendary rivalry between Argentina and England has been an added motivation for the reigning champions.
"Even though it was just one match, we experienced some special moments. The fans wanted this victory more than any other, because of the huge stakes in playing England in the semifinals and reaching the World Cup final again," Messi said after the match.
England had taken the lead through Anthony Gordon before Enzo Fernandez equalized in the 85th minute. Lautaro Martinez then scored the winner seven minutes later to send Argentina through to the final against Spain.
Messi, who provided assists for both of Argentina's goals, said the team's fighting spirit was key to the comeback.
"This team never stops fighting. We took to the field to play football with determination. We pressed the opposing team in their own half and proved that we were capable of winning matches in normal time, without going to extra time," he said.
"No Argentinian wanted to lose this match. This World Cup journey has been incredible, especially considering the importance of this semifinal against England. Regardless of the context, no one wanted to lose today, but that's the reality," Messi added.
Martinez, who scored 11 minutes after replacing Nicolas Tagliafico, appeared to struggle to contain his emotions after the match.
"It's very difficult to talk right now, but I'll try not to cry because I've cried a lot there. What we've achieved is incredible. We're moving forward, and that's the greatest satisfaction we can have," said the 28-year-old.
"We managed to get a very difficult win. The first half was very intense. They pressed us very well. In the second half, they scored, then they played defensively, and we were able to control the game more calmly, keeping possession."
Martinez noted that the Argentine fans, who outnumbered the English fans and drowned out the roar, provided a crucial boost for the national team.
"Thanks to the fans, everything was easier. We managed to score the second goal in injury time, and after that, there was just incredible happiness," Martinez said.
The Inter Milan striker predicted that Spain would be an even tougher opponent.
