The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) is using the results of the 2026 Asian Junior Badminton Championship (AJC) as a wake-up call to address a number of shortcomings in the Indonesian junior team before competing in the 2026 World Junior Championship (WJC) to be held in Cairo, Egypt, from October 5-17.
Eskar Denatara, the Indonesian Team Manager at the 2026 AJC, said the failure to meet the target at the event was an important note, particularly regarding the athletes' ability to manage momentum, maintain composure, and make decisions at crucial points.
"When we faced Korea in the group stage, the boys were able to capitalize on the momentum and secure victory. Conversely, against Malaysia and Thailand, we lost several key points at crucial moments. We were able to compete qualitatively, but our opponents appeared more composed due to their greater international experience," Eskar said in an official statement from the Indonesian Badminton Association.
Eskar said the team competition format, with its 55-point game system, makes each match highly dynamic. In this format, the ability to capitalize on momentum is a crucial factor, as even small mistakes can have a significant impact on the final result.
According to him, the technical, physical, and mental abilities of Indonesian athletes are generally quite good. However, PBSI still has work to do on tactical aspects, match composure, and increasing international experience.
"Some athletes are just making their international debut at the AJC. Experience under the pressure of major competitions is something they must continue to build to mature," said Eskar.
