Puan recalled the history of relations between Indonesia and India while receiving PM Modi

Indonesian House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani recalled the history of relations between Indonesia and India in her speech while welcoming Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the House of Representatives Building.

"Indonesia and India have very long and special historical roots," said Puan, opening her speech before PM Modi.

Puan said that relations between the two countries had been established when the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, Soekarno, was the main guest of honor at the first Indian Republic Day commemoration in 1950.

Several years later, Puan continued, Indonesia and India jointly held the Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung and promoted the spirit of the Bandung Ten Principles, which later became the foundation of the non-aligned movement.

According to Puan, relations between Indonesia and India are growing stronger. President Prabowo Subianto's state visit in 2025, marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, strengthened this strategic partnership.

"We are two major democracies, fellow maritime powers in the Indian Ocean, who uphold the principle of sovereignty amidst increasingly complex global geopolitical dynamics," he said.

The Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan added, supports the elevation of relations between the two countries to a comprehensive strategic partnership and the Shared Vision on Maritime Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, which was agreed upon during PM Modi's visit to Indonesia in 2018.

"These two documents provide a strong foundation for expanding cooperation in various fields," he said.

PM Modi visited the Indonesian parliament building on the sidelines of his state visit to Jakarta.

On that occasion, PM Modi also delivered a speech before members of the Indonesian parliament.

The event was attended by President Prabowo Subianto, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Chairman of the MPR RI Ahmad Muzani, Chairman of the DPD RI Sultan Bachtiar Najamudin, along with members of the Red and White Cabinet.
