The Corruption Eradication Commission has proposed a review of the implementation of large-scale campaigning or public meetings in the general election process to prevent corruption.
"The costly public meeting model needs to be reviewed and replaced with more effective methods," KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo told reporters.
Budi said that the Corruption Eradication Committee is encouraging a transformation of campaign patterns towards simpler and more efficient campaign patterns, such as campaigns using digital platforms.
"In this way, political competition will no longer be dominated by capital, but rather by the quality of the candidates' ideas, work programs, and integrity," he said.
He said that according to a study on corruption prevention in the implementation of general elections conducted by the KPK Monitoring Directorate, high campaign costs and political expenses can encourage corrupt practices.
"The study shows that high campaign costs and political spending are fundamental issues that require serious attention," he said.
"This condition is a risk factor that can encourage corrupt practices, both before and after someone is elected as a public official," he added.
Based on the results of the study, he continued, the campaign system which includes the installation of large numbers of campaign materials, public meetings, mass mobilization, and various forms of high-cost efforts makes political costs increasingly expensive.
