Indonesian House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani said her institution is ready to strengthen cooperation with the Indian parliament in various regional and multilateral parliamentary forums.
"We hope that cooperation between our two parliaments will increasingly be oriented towards providing tangible benefits for the welfare of the people of both countries," said Puan in her speech while receiving a visit from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the House of Representatives Building.
According to him, amidst increasing great power rivalry and other global challenges, Indonesia and India have a shared responsibility to maintain regional stability and strengthen development cooperation.
Puan stated that cooperation between nations and countries must continue to be strengthened. To strengthen cooperation between countries, close synergy between legislative and executive institutions is crucial.
"Parliamentary diplomacy not only complements government diplomacy but also expands the space for dialogue, builds mutual understanding, strengthens trust, and encourages political support for various bilateral and multilateral cooperation agendas of mutual interest," he said.
Puan also expressed her appreciation for the Indian parliament's establishment of the India-Indonesia Parliamentary Friendship Group in February 2026.
The group is expected to work closely with the Indonesian House of Representatives-Indian Parliament Bilateral Cooperation Group established in January 2025.
