US President Donald Trump said that Iran “very much wants” to reach an agreement with the United States, noting that he gave Tehran a week’s grace period because of the official funeral ceremonies for the Iranian Supreme Leader.
This came in a speech delivered by Trump in South Dakota on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States , during which he addressed the Iranian issue and developments in the Middle East.
He added, in his speech, that his country had “completely destroyed Iran” (economically and politically), reiterating that Tehran “strongly desires to sit at the negotiating table and reach an agreement.”
In this context, the US president referred to the funeral and burial ceremonies that were held recently in Iran, saying: “We gave them a week because of the funeral ceremonies.”
On Friday, Iran began official funeral ceremonies for Khamenei in Tehran, as part of a week of mourning and funerals that includes stops in Iranian and Iraqi cities, before his burial in the northeastern city of Mashhad.
