US President Donald Trump said he "holds Canada responsible for the invasion of dirty, polluted, and unhealthy air into the United States."
In a post on his social media account Truth Social, Trump described the situation as "totally unacceptable," saying: "We hold Canada responsible for its negligence in the proper maintenance of its forests, shrubs, and brush, which has resulted in the United States being invaded with polluted, filthy, unhealthy air of dangerous and totally unacceptable quality! I will be calling the Prime Minister during the day to find out what they intend to do about it. The cost is incalculable! Canada has refused to engage in basic forest management and waste removal, knowing full well that this refusal would inevitably lead to this result."
He added: "This is deliberate negligence, which is repeated annually, and costs the United States billions of dollars. This cost resulting from pollution must necessarily be added to the tariffs that Canada currently pays. Thank you for your attention to this matter."
The Trump administration imposed tariffs on imports of some Canadian products, even though the Supreme Court declared many of these tariffs unconstitutional.
The World Cup final, which will be held in New Jersey on Sunday, was not mentioned, but the White House says administration officials are monitoring the wildfire situation.
