An international team of researchers analyzed the diets of 149 countries, encompassing 22 age groups, using data collected between 2000 and 2019, to discover that Generation Alpha (0-16 years) and Generation Z (16-29 years) cause the highest rates of greenhouse gas emissions compared to other age groups, because these two groups consume larger quantities of meat, especially red meat, in addition to dairy, processed foods, and sugary drinks.

What is most worrying is that the rise in these emissions is also accompanied by a decline in the quality of the diet, leading to a double crisis that combines malnutrition with the accelerating pace of climate change.

But the biggest surprise was the challenge to the prevailing belief that older people are the biggest polluters. Professor Yuli Chan of the University of Birmingham said the study's results showed the opposite, explaining that young people surpass older people in terms of per capita food-related emissions, which poses significant challenges for policymakers to curb these increasing emissions.

However, the picture changes when looking at total emissions. While young people top the list of per capita emissions, those over 60 years of age, as a group, constitute the largest source of food-related emissions globally. This is primarily due to the rapid increase in the number of elderly people worldwide, especially in wealthy countries like Japan, the United States, and Western Europe, where they contribute between 22% and 29% of total food-related emissions. This is not because their diets are more environmentally damaging, but rather because of their growing numbers.

Researchers attribute the higher per capita emissions among young people to their increased consumption of animal products and meat. While some studies suggest that Generation Alpha is more inclined towards vegetarian or vegan diets, global data shows that they continue to consume larger quantities of meat than older adults, with these consumption levels increasing over time.

Research has shown that consuming just 100 grams of meat daily—an amount less than the size of a single burger patty—results in emissions roughly four times greater than those produced by a vegetarian diet. Furthermore, the carbon footprint of vegetarians is less than a quarter of that of people who consume large quantities of meat, making the reliance of Generation Alpha on meat-rich diets a major factor in their high environmental footprint.

But addressing this problem is not simple, as conditions differ between rich and poor countries. In high-income countries, increased emissions are often linked to malnutrition resulting from overconsumption of unhealthy foods, while in low- and middle-income countries, increased emissions are often accompanied by an improvement in nutritional quality, as young people there begin to consume larger quantities of food, which is a positive development from a health perspective.

Herein lies the dilemma pointed out by Professor Klaus Hopczek of the University of Groningen: reducing emissions by reducing certain types of food may lead to unintended health effects in some areas, which presents governments with a difficult challenge of reducing the environmental impact without hindering the hard-won nutritional improvement.

To address this problem, researchers suggest focusing on education and awareness from an early age, along with improving the nutritional environment in schools and among young people, so as to encourage healthy and sustainable choices. They emphasized the need to strike a balance between environmental goals and the nutritional needs of each age group, especially in developing countries that still face the challenges of malnutrition. What is required is not simply reducing meat consumption, but rather redirecting dietary habits in a way that protects the planet and preserves human health.
