Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra, said strengthening national ethics is an important foundation in eradicating corruption because strong legal regulations must be supported by citizens' moral awareness.
During his visit to Sumedang, Yusril said that Indonesia already has various legal instruments and means to handle criminal acts of corruption, but their existence is not enough if it is not accompanied by ethics in national and state life.
"The laws are already so harsh, even with life imprisonment and the death penalty, but they still occur. Therefore, I believe there's no other option but to strengthen the nation's ethics, and that's the importance of Pancasila," he said during a public lecture at the IPDN Jatinangor Campus.
He explained that the available anti-corruption tools include the Corruption Eradication Law, the Corruption Eradication Commission Law, the Corruption Crime Court , as well as the law enforcement authority held by the police, the prosecutor's office, and the KPK.
According to Yusril, the existence of these devices needs to be accompanied by character building and moral responsibility so that efforts to eradicate corruption not only proceed through legal mechanisms, but are also supported by the awareness of each individual to avoid actions that violate ethics.
