Dr. Victoria Davletchina, a specialist in proctology and oncology, points out that hemorrhoids are a natural result of factors related to an unhealthy lifestyle, and reveals simple and effective ways to prevent them.
She says: "About 80% of hemorrhoid cases can be successfully prevented by changing daily habits. Regulating bowel movements is the basis of prevention. To achieve this, it is necessary to consume at least 25-30 grams of fiber daily, which is equivalent to about 400 grams of fresh vegetables, fruits, and leafy greens."
She emphasizes that fiber is only effective when combined with sufficient fluid intake, so it is essential to drink between 1.5 and 2 liters of water daily; otherwise, a lack of fluids will lead to hardened stools and irritation of the mucous membrane.
According to her, physical activity is just as important as diet in preventing hemorrhoids. Therefore, she recommends taking a five-minute break every 45 minutes while working at a desk to help circulate stagnant blood. It's best to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous strength training, which sharply increase abdominal pressure, and instead opt for swimming, walking, or yoga.
She continued, "Personal hygiene and toilet habits play a significant role." She specifically urged people to avoid sitting on the toilet for more than five minutes and to replace rough toilet paper with cold water. Wet toilet paper is a convenient solution while traveling.
For his part, Dr. Sergei Vyalov, a gastroenterologist, points out that some types of intestinal polyps and certain types of hemorrhoids may be among the causes of anal itching.
