Researchers have warned that vanillin, a flavoring commonly used in e-cigarettes, may pose a risk to fetal development.
The researchers urged that warnings be issued to pregnant women and those planning to become pregnant about this potential harm, and they also called on regulatory bodies to make it mandatory to list all ingredients on e-cigarette packaging.
These recommendations came after a series of laboratory experiments conducted by a team from the University of California, Riverside, led by Professor Prue Talbot, in which they exposed embryonic stem cells to different concentrations of vanillin and discovered that even small amounts of it caused early cells to lose their ability to differentiate into all the various cell types, while higher concentrations led to cell death.
Professor Talbot explained that the team focused on vanillin because it is widely used in e-cigarette liquids at high concentrations, and because embryonic cells contain a protein channel called TRPV4 that binds to this substance. She noted that these changes could be very dangerous and prevent the normal development of embryos, and that their data indicate that minute concentrations of vanillin may reach the fetus in pregnant women who use e-cigarettes.
The team wrote in the journal Human Reproduction that doctors should advise patients who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant about this risk, and that regulatory bodies should consider requiring e-cigarette companies to disclose all ingredients.
Professor Jacob George, a professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Dundee, commented that the results are laboratory-based, worrying, and warrant further investigation in human clinical trials, as laboratory results do not always translate into clinical reality. He noted that many researchers, including himself, have called for restricting flavors in e-cigarettes and conducting more research on their effects.
While e-cigarettes are touted as a way to reduce harm compared to traditional cigarettes, the presence of unregulated chemicals in flavorings is a concern that needs addressing. Professor Marianne Knight, a professor of maternal and child health at Oxford University, pointed out that the way cells are exposed in the lab differs from how a fetus is exposed to vanillin from maternal smoking.
