A newborn baby has astonished doctors in India after being born with four arms and four legs, in a rare case believed to be a "parasitic twin," where one twin is underdeveloped in the womb but remains attached to his sibling.
The baby was born on August 23 to his mother, Rita Ahirwar, 29, at a health center in the Laochnagar district of Madhya Pradesh, India, weighing 3 kilograms. The extra limbs were attached to his upper torso and abdomen.
When the child's father, Shivcharan Ahirwar, learned of his son's condition, he rushed to see him and described his birth as "a gift from God." Doctors confirmed that the child's condition is stable, but further evaluation is needed before any medical intervention. Detailed imaging tests are planned to determine how the extra limbs are connected to his body and to assess his blood vessels, bones, circulation, and internal organs before he is airlifted to a specialized hospital in Jabalpur, 50 kilometers away.
Dr. Singh, who oversaw the case, said it was an extremely rare case of conjoined twins, describing it as "one in a million." Nurse Savita, who has worked at the center for over 14 years, expressed her astonishment, saying, "This is the first case of its kind I've encountered in my career. In typical conjoined twins, two babies develop in the womb, but here one twin developed fully while the other only had arms and legs (without the rest of the body)." This classifies the case as parasitic twinning, a rare form of conjoined twinning where one twin is underdeveloped and dependent on the other for survival.
Parasitic twinning is an extremely rare condition in which one twin does not fully develop but remains attached to the other twin (the dominant twin), who develops normally but is born with extra limbs and sometimes extra organs and tissues. The dominant twin is prone to health complications and often requires surgery immediately after birth to remove the extra limbs and tissues.
The causes of this condition remain unknown, but one theory suggests that part of the embryo fails to divide completely in the early stages of an identical twin pregnancy. In a normal identical twin pregnancy, a single fertilized egg divides into two, but if complete division fails, conjoined twins are formed. In some cases, one embryo is partially absorbed by the other, halting its development and resulting in a parasitic twin. This condition can be detected during pregnancy, but it may not be clearly visible on medical imaging depending on the size and location of the malformation.
