The Telecommunications and Information Accessibility Agency of the Ministry of Communication and Digital is implementing several strategies to provide equal access to telecommunications services across all regions, including areas not yet covered by telecommunications networks in Papua.
The President Director of BAKTI, Ministry of Communication and Digital, Fadhilah Mathar, said that almost 98 percent of the approximately 83,000 villages and sub-districts in Indonesia have been reached by telecommunications networks.
"There are still around 2,000 villages that have not been covered ," said Fadhilah after the Bakti Media Connect 2026 event.
Fadhilah said that the areas that currently have not been reached by telecommunications networks are mostly in the Papua region.
BAKTI noted that around 700 residential areas in Papua do not yet have internet access.
The construction of telecommunications infrastructure such as Base Transceiver Stations has been carried out in several locations in Papua, but the process has been hampered by security issues.
In order to accelerate the provision of telecommunications facilities in the region, BAKTI will relocate the construction of telecommunications infrastructure from less secure locations to safer places in coordination with security forces and relevant stakeholders.
"Especially for areas where infrastructure already exists, how do we proceed? The process actually involves moving materials from our warehouse in Jayapura to the destination, for example, Intan Jaya. Then, we activate the on-air service in collaboration with cellular operators," Fadhilah explained.
