A South Korean government source revealed on Sunday a new border incident between the two Koreas, in which the South Korean army fired warning shots after a number of North Korean soldiers crossed the border.
Border incident between the two Koreas on the anniversary of Korea's liberation
South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported that these were the first warning shots fired by the South Korean military this year in response to North Korean troops crossing the border. No previous violations of the military demarcation line by North Korea have been reported this year. It was reported that the soldiers were likely patrolling the area when they crossed the military demarcation line, which divides the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas - a legacy of the Korean War (1950-1953).
The North Korean soldiers returned to their side after the warning shots, and no other unusual activity was reported. Under the rules of engagement, the South Korean military broadcasts warnings via loudspeakers if North Korean forces approach the military demarcation line, followed by warning shots if they cross the border.
