Dentist Kristina Peshanskaya points out that tooth discoloration is a natural process resulting from age-related changes, along with the influence of external factors.

According to her, even with regular dental care, tooth enamel gradually loses its shine, primarily due to thinning. Enamel, the outer layer of the tooth, is translucent, while beneath it lies the yellowish dentin layer. As we age, the enamel wears away, making the dentin more visible.

The dentist points out that other factors also affect tooth color, including tartar buildup, excessive consumption of coffee, tea, and red wine, smoking, and the appearance of microscopic cracks in the enamel. Certain medications, dental injuries, and diseases can also cause discoloration. Therefore, it is essential to determine the cause of tooth discoloration before undergoing any cosmetic procedures.

According to her, if the discoloration is due to surface staining, the first step is a professional teeth cleaning. During this procedure, the dentist removes tartar and plaque. After this, the teeth become noticeably whiter, but this does not mean they change their natural color; rather, they return to their original shade. Professional cleaning also helps remove plaque and surface stains, reduces the risk of cavities, and prepares the teeth for whitening.

If the teeth are not satisfactory after cleaning, in-office light whitening can be considered. In this case, a special gel is activated by light, and the procedure is performed under the supervision of a dentist after assessing the condition of the tooth enamel. Modern techniques allow teeth to be lightened several shades without causing mechanical damage to the tissues. After the procedure, the dentist provides recommendations for oral hygiene and a "whitening diet" to maintain the results.

She says: "Age-related tooth discoloration is a natural process, but modern dental techniques can effectively restore a beautiful smile. Dental care helps restore its natural color, while teeth whitening contributes to making it brighter and whiter."
