Researchers have found that the number of natural teeth may be a surprising indicator of how long pancreatic cancer patients may live after undergoing surgery.

 The study found that patients with 21 or more normal teeth lived about two years longer on average than those with fewer teeth, suggesting that the mouth may retain signs of chronic inflammation, malnutrition, physical fragility, and other health factors that accumulate throughout life.

The team from Hiroshima University who conducted the study analyzed data from 339 patients who underwent pancreatic resection between 2014 and 2022, all of whom underwent preoperative dental examinations to assess the number of teeth remaining and their ability to chew.

The team found that the average survival time was 60.7 months (about 5 years) for those with 21 teeth or more, compared to 39.1 months (about 3 years) for those with 20 teeth or fewer. This relationship remained strong even after excluding other factors such as tumor stage, spread, type of treatment, and nutritional status.

Interestingly, the patient's ability to chew was not associated with survival, suggesting that tooth loss not only reflects impaired oral function, but is a broader indicator of the body's overall health, including chronic inflammation, smoking, malnutrition, and age-related fragility, all of which affect the body's ability to withstand surgery and chemotherapy.

The findings call for a rethinking of pancreatic cancer care, so that it is not limited to treating the tumor alone, but includes a comprehensive assessment of oral health as part of a personalized strategy for prevention and rehabilitation.

However, the researchers acknowledge that the study was limited to a single hospital and a second apanese sample, necessitating larger and more diverse studies to confirm the findings. They also plan to explore whether oral bacteria and infections play a direct role in cancer development, or whether tooth loss is simply a sign of declining overall health. The team hopes that oral health assessment will become an essential part of treatment planning for pancreatic cancer patients in the future.
