Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid said that the presence of artificial intelligence (AI) centers at universities can strengthen the national AI ecosystem.
At the launch of the UGM–Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison–NVIDIA NVAITC Joint Center at the Innovation and Creativity Center of Gadjah Mada University he said that AI development cannot be done simply by adopting technology developed by other countries.
He stated that Indonesia needs to build its own capabilities by increasing talent capacity and developing research and innovation.
According to him, AI sovereignty must be built by strengthening the capacity of talent, research, computing, and the technology ecosystem in developing AI to meet national needs.
"Let's build AI in Indonesia, for Indonesia," he said.
The UGM–Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison–NVIDIA NVAITC Joint Center is considered an effort to accelerate AI research, innovation, and talent development that brings together the strengths of universities, industry, technology partners, and the government.
One of its foundations is GPU Merdeka, which enables students and researchers to gain access to high-performance computing through a GPU-as-a-Service model .
Meutya encouraged the NVAITC Joint Center to not only serve as a technology development facility but also to provide a space for Indonesian talent to master technology and bring economic and social benefits to the community.
He also reminded that improvements in connectivity, data centers, cloud services, and computing capacity must be accompanied by the ability to increase productivity and innovation, as well as data protection, system security, and public trust.
