Nepal Floods: Northern Nepal near the Nepal–Tibet (China) border

A catastrophic flash flood struck northern Nepal near the Nepal–Tibet (China) border on Wednesday, August 26, causing widespread destruction in Rasuwa and downstream areas. The disaster swept away homes, roads, bridges, vehicles and infrastructure, while hundreds of people remain missing. 

The latest reports indicate at least 95 people have died in Nepal, while China has reported three additional deaths in Tibet, bringing the combined reported death toll to 98. Hundreds remain unaccounted for, and casualty figures may change as rescue teams reach isolated areas. 

Officials have reported hundreds of missing people, including foreign tourists. One report put the number of missing tourists at 384, including people from India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Malaysia.

What happened?

The disaster occurred around the Bhote Koshi/Lhende Khola river system in Rasuwa, close to the China border. Preliminary satellite analysis indicates that an ice-and-rock landslide occurred upstream, apparently blocking the river and creating a temporary debris-filled lake. When the blockage failed, a powerful surge rushed downstream. 

There has also been discussion of whether an earthquake contributed to the landslide, but the precise triggering mechanism is still being investigated. 

Worst-affected areas

The Rasuwa district, particularly Syapru Besi and Timure, has suffered severe destruction. Floodwaters also affected downstream areas along the Trishuli River, including Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan. Authorities warned people living near major rivers to move to safer locations. 

Infrastructure destroyed

The extremely fast-moving, debris-filled water damaged or destroyed:

Houses and villages, Roads and bridges, Vehicles, Electricity and power infrastructure, Hydropower project facilities, Border and customs infrastructure, Communications and transportation links

The destruction has made access to several affected areas extremely difficult. 

Rescue operation

The Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police have been deployed for search-and-rescue operations. Helicopters and other emergency resources are being used, although damaged roads, high river levels and difficult Himalayan terrain are complicating operations. 

Impact in Tibet

The disaster also severely affected Gyirong County in Tibet, on the Chinese side of the border. Chinese authorities reported deaths and hundreds missing after a mudslide hit the area, damaging roads, communications and power infrastructure. 

Important warning

Authorities are urging residents and travelers to stay away from the Bhote Koshi, Trishuli and other swollen rivers because additional flooding and landslides remain possible. The situation is still developing, so the death and missing-person figures should be treated as provisional.
