Russian Melnikova wins European gymnastics gold

 

Russian Angelina Melnikova won the gold medal in the all-around competition at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in the Croatian capital, Zagreb

Russian Angelina Melnikova won the gold medal in the all-around competition at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in the Croatian capital, Zagreb.

Melnikova scored a total of 55.932 points after performing on all four apparatus, while her compatriot Anna Kalmykova came in second with 54.632 points, and the Frenchwoman Elena Colas took the bronze with 53.966 points.

Melnikova received an increase in her rating for the floor exercise after a protest from the Russian coaching staff, raising her score in the exercise to 13,800 points, with the difficulty level increased to 5.8.

Russian gymnasts are participating in the tournament as neutrals. The women's competitions will take place from August 13 to 16, while the men's competitions will be held from August 19 to 23. The tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2026 World Championships.

Melnikova has an impressive record, having won an Olympic gold medal and two world championships in the all-around.
