The Norwegian Football Federation has called on FIFA President Gianni Infantino to step down immediately, in a move that increases the pressure on the FIFA president, who is facing an escalating crisis.
The Norwegian Football Federation held a meeting yesterday, Thursday, and the federation's president, Lise Clavinis, said that the decision was made to demand Infantino's resignation.
Clavinis told The Guardian: “We decided that we no longer trusted Infantino. We were constantly concerned, and every year, indeed at every stage of the year, there was something that increased that concern. For us, the trust is now over, and there is no way for Infantino to return.”
This announcement is the latest blow to Infantino, as the fallout continues from his controversial plan to sell part of the World Cup profits through a FIFA-affiliated trading company called "FIFA Forward Enterprise".
UEFA confirmed on Thursday that its threat to boycott the World Cup and other FIFA competitions remains in place, despite FIFA backtracking on its plan ad apologizing for it.
UEFA reiterated that it has lost confidence in Infantino.
Earlier in the week, Infantino appeared to have successfully contained the possibility of an internal rebellion during a summit he held with senior FIFA officials in the Moroccan capital, Rabat.
FIFA said in a statement after the meeting that its president had received the full support of all those present at the meeting.
But UEFA's response, followed by Norway's direct demand for Infantino's resignation, showed that the anger within Europe, in particular, remains strong.
The English and Welsh federations had withdrawn their support for Infantino's re-election during the FIFA elections scheduled for next March.
