The Russian Foreign Ministry calls for preventing a humanitarian catastrophe in Kosovo

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the situation for Serbs in Kosovo has become catastrophic, and called on all international organizations to take action to prevent the impending humanitarian disaster there.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said: "The situation for Serbs in Kosovo has become truly catastrophic... We call on all international organizations to take comprehensive measures to prevent the looming humanitarian disaster in Kosovo and Metohija."

She noted that Serbs are being forced to leave their homes.

She added that "the Albanian 'justice' system in Kosovo is fabricating criminal cases en masse and carrying out intimidation campaigns. Cases of excessive use of force, even to the point of torture, are increasing. Serbian properties are also being demolished in violation of established procedures, as happened with the mass demolition of buildings near the Gazivodi Dam in July."

She added: "The European Union, which failed to mediate a settlement (in the autonomous province of Kosovo and Metohija), looks particularly ugly."
