A study published in the journal "Nutrients" showed that some medicinal plants may contribute to improving memory and some cognitive functions in people with age-related cognitive disorders.
Researchers studied the compositions of several medicinal plants and their effects on memory and brain function . The results showed that among the plants with the most effect on brain function were bacopa monnieri, ginseng (Panax ginseng), and saffron (Crocus sativus), as their use was associated with improved memory and performance in tests that assess general cognitive functions.
Researchers attribute this potential effect of medicinal plants to their ability to influence several brain processes simultaneously, as the compounds they contain can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, support mitochondrial function, and influence processes associated with the accumulation of beta-amyloid protein and pathological changes in tau protein, two proteins that play an important role in the development of Alzheimer's disease.
In addition, some plant compounds may support neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to modify existing connections between neurons and form new ones, processes that are essential for learning and memory .
The study authors stressed that the available evidence is still insufficient, and therefore medicinal plants cannot yet be considered an alternative to approved treatment for cognitive function disorders.
