Researchers from the University of Liverpool followed 243 domestic cats for nine years as part of the CatPAWS project. The results of the study were published in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science.

Of the 209 cats followed between 2017 and 2024, 96% suffered from at least one age-related disease, while 84% experienced two or more simultaneously. The most common problems were related to teeth, joints, and heart. As a cat ages, more body systems are affected at the same time.
Another worrying finding is that even a slight loss of muscle mass in middle age doubles the risk of death. Scientists have noted that purebred cats die at twice the rate of non-purebred cats, attributing this to the influence of their lineage.
Scientists have launched a new 12-month trial to investigate whether diet can influence the aging process and extend the healthy lifespan of cats. Specialists will monitor the animals' physical condition, behavior, the onset of chronic diseases, and other indicators of healthy aging.
The study participants will be provided with food throughout the trial period, and the cats will undergo detailed veterinary examinations free of charge during the visits.
The project leader, Professor Alex Herman, points out that long-term monitoring allows for the detection of changes that cannot be observed during a single examination.
Herman stressed that monitoring cats should begin long before the first symptoms of the disease appear.
