The drink is based on L-fucose, a natural monosaccharide extracted from brown algae. Studies have shown that this sugar possesses immune-modulating, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.
According to a statement from the university's press office, the scientists created a beverage compound enriched with L-fucose oligosac molecules from the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus - a natural product created using a special technology that allows the isolation of biologically active components without the use of chemicals, while preserving their original structure and high bioavailability.
Victoria Bates, project manager and director of the university's Biopolymer Technologies Research and Training Center, points out that L-fucose is a monosaccharide and a key component of the complex that lines the intestines and protects them from the harmful effects of bacteria. For probiotic bacteria, it not only serves as an important energy source but also stimulates their active growth. Furthermore, its consumption releases short-chain fatty acids, which nourish intestinal epithelial cells and activate immune cells.
She says: "This product is currently intended for veterinary use as a nutritional supplement for animals, but we are prepared in the future to offer a version of it as an active probiotic supplement to support the balance of human gut microbiota."
