The technical staff of the Egyptian national team, led by Hossam Hassan, announced a new decision regarding the Pharaohs' captain and Trabzonspor star Mohamed Salah after the draw against Angola in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Egypt and Angola played their first qualifying match for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations on Friday, ending in a goalless draw at Cairo International Stadium.
Mohamed Salah participated in the match from the beginning until he left in the second half, before Hossam Hassan decided to replace him in the 60th minute and bring on Ahmed Mostafa Zizo.
Hossam Hassan decided to rest Mohamed Salah from the South Sudan match due to the state of the pitch (tartan), explaining, according to the national team's media center, that there was a prior agreement between the coaching staff and the player before the Angola match in order to protect the player.
The Egyptian national team's coaching staff had previously rested Mohamed Salah in the matches against Mauritania and Cape Verde due to the (tartan) pitch.
However, some press reports indicated that Mohamed Salah preferred to leave the Egyptian national team camp after the recent statements made by Hossam Hassan about his teammate Mohamed El Shenawy, which sparked widespread controversy.
Other reports also indicated that Salah was angry about Hossam Hassan’s decision to substitute him during the Angola match, noting that the player believes that the coach’s repeated substitutions were for non-technical reasons, despite Hossam Hassan’s confirmation after the match that the decision was related to a technical vision and the course of the match.
Egypt are scheduled to play away against South Sudan in the second round of qualifiers next Tuesday.
