A "robot kindergarten" has opened in Beijing, where researchers are studying an alternative approach to teaching machines, according to the Chinese state-run Global Times.
The newspaper pointed out that instead of humans teaching robots every move, scientists want robots to learn through trial and error from their own experiences.
The robotics education center was established through a collaboration between Tashan Technology, a Chinese company specializing in tactile sensors, and a team led by Canadian computer scientist Richard Sutton.
The center places great emphasis on tactile perception and continuous learning. The newspaper reported, "If the robot bumps into a wall while learning to walk, this collision becomes part of its experience. The robot records what happened, tries again, and adjusts its movement to avoid repeating the same mistake." It noted that the very act of failing becomes learning data.
The newspaper explained that continuous learning means that the robot must be able to continue adapting even after it has been started up, including adapting to situations that were not present in its initial training.
The newspaper quoted Wang Ping, a researcher at the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences, as saying: "Self-exploration of the surrounding environment can help robots move beyond limited learning for specific tasks and form a more fundamental understanding of the physical world."
The robotics sector, particularly the development of humanoid robots, is experiencing rapid growth in China. Last August, the Chinese humanoid robot "Lightning" covered the 100 meters in 9.32 seconds, while the human record for this distance is 9.58 seconds, held by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. Another Chinese humanoid robot, "Tiangong," broke a human record in the 400-meter race, completing the distance in 37.71 seconds.
It is worth noting that Shanghai witnessed the opening of the first Chinese base for training humanoid robots in 2025.
