A scientific study links attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to digestive problems

A study published in the scientific journal "JAD" showed that people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are more likely to develop digestive problems such as constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.

Hot Topics

The researchers analyzed the results of 23 studies involving more than 1.9 million people. The analysis included participants of various ages who had been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The results showed that the likelihood of various digestive symptoms appearing in those with ADHD was approximately 48% higher, the likelihood of irritable bowel syndrome was 58% higher, and the likelihood of constipation increased to almost double.

The most obvious association was with fecal incontinence (involuntary defecation), with those with ADHD being more than four times more likely to develop it than those without.

Scientists suggest that this relationship may be due to the interaction between the gut and the brain, where changes in gut microbes, vagus nerve function, and behavioral characteristics may play a role. Furthermore, medications used to treat ADHD may affect gastrointestinal health.

The researchers emphasize that this relationship does not necessarily mean that ADHD directly causes digestive problems, and more research is still needed to separate the biological mechanisms from the effect of drugs and other factors.
