Apple launched its Vision Pro glasses in 2024, presenting them as the beginning of a new era in spatial computing. Despite receiving positive reviews, their high price and limited range of available applications and experiences raised questions about the product's future.
Since then, there have been reports of the development of a new version that would be cheaper, lighter, and more advanced, but Apple has abandoned a number of designs that were in development.
According to Bloomberg, the company is currently working on a new device codenamed "N224," which could represent a complete redesign of the glasses. One design involves separating the computing components and placing them in a separate, disc-like unit to reduce the glasses' size and weight, while another design uses the same basic structure but with new materials to make it lighter.
Apple is still considering which of these designs it will adopt, and the new device may not see the light of day before 2027 or 2028.
Despite this, the company affirms its continued support for Vision Pro. John Ternos, who will assume the role of CEO, stated that the glasses represent "the beginning of a long journey," noting their potential use in fields such as surgery and film production, and emphasizing that Apple sees a promising future for this technology.
These developments come at a time when Apple is facing increasing competition from Meta, which unveiled a new augmented reality headset priced at $1,300, just over a third of the price of the Vision Pro, with a significantly lighter weight.
Reports also indicate that Apple is developing its own smart glasses, similar to Meta products, in an effort to expand its presence in the wearables and augmented reality market.
