Al-Hilal club has taken its first official steps against some Al-Taawon fans, following chants that the club described as offensive towards its Portuguese player Ruben Neves during the two teams’ match in the Saudi Professional League.
Users on the “X” platform shared a video showing a group of Al-Taawoun fans chanting the name of the late Portuguese star Diogo Jota, in an attempt to provoke Neves, who appeared angry and affected after hearing the chants.
Neves had a strong friendship with Jota, who died in July 2025 at the age of 28 in a car accident, after they played together for Wolverhampton Wanderers and the Portuguese national team.
Al-Hilal issued an official statement announcing that it had filed a complaint with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation regarding the incident, stressing its categorical rejection of what it described as "violations" that go beyond the limits of sports competition.
The club said such actions "are contrary to sporting values and ethics," stressing that competition, however intense, does not justify exploiting human circumstances or players' feelings of loss in order to provoke them.
Al-Hilal confirmed that its complaint aims to preserve the rights of the club and its players, demanding that the incident be dealt with in accordance with the regulations and rules in force in Saudi football.
The club also expressed its confidence in the Saudi Arabian Football Federation to take appropriate measures, stressing the importance of protecting sports competition from abusive practices and promoting the values of respect and sportsmanship in stadiums.
No official comment has yet been issued by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation or Al-Taawoun Club regarding the incident.
