Deleting a message from a messaging app may not mean that it disappears completely from the phone. On some Android devices, the user can go back to the notification log to see notifications that have appeared before, including message notifications, even after deleting them from the notification panel or deleting the message from the messaging app.
However, this feature does not retrieve the original message from the application, but rather displays what appeared in the notification. Also, its availability and how it works vary according to the Android version and the phone manufacturer.
What is the notification log?
Google explains on its official Android support page that the Notification History feature allows users to find recently dismissed notifications, in addition to today's notification history. The company confirms that this feature is not available on all devices and that the method of accessing it may vary from phone to phone.
The importance of the feature lies in the fact that it records the notification that arrived on the phone, so it can be used, for example, to find out the content of a message notification that appeared on the screen and was then deleted by mistake. If the messaging application displays part of the message text in the notification, this part may also appear within the notification log.
But it is important to distinguish between reading a notification of a deleted message and restoring it. The notification log does not return the message to WhatsApp or any other application, nor does it retrieve the chat database. Rather, it keeps a record of what the application sent to the notification system.
How do I activate the feature?
On devices that support notification history, the feature can usually be accessed through Settings, then Notifications, and then by looking for the Notification History option. Google notes that menu names and steps may vary depending on the manufacturer and system version.
Samsung Galaxy phones provide a clear example of this, as the company explains that the user can open Settings, then Notifications, then Advanced Settings, then Notification History, then activate the feature, and after activating it, recent notifications appear that can be referred to later.
Samsung points out an important fact: the log cannot display notifications that arrived before the feature was activated. That is, activating the notification log after deleting a message will not necessarily restore it, because the phone was not recording these notifications before the function was activated.
Is it possible to read a deleted WhatsApp message?
The answer can be yes in some cases, but under certain conditions. If a message arrives via an application like WhatsApp and its text appears in the phone's notification, and the notification log was already enabled, the notification content may remain available in the log even after the message is deleted from the conversation.
If the message content does not appear in the notification at all, the notification log will not be able to invent the text or retrieve the content from the application servers, and notifications that contain a brief preview will not necessarily display the full message.
This means that the success of the method depends on the notification, application, and phone settings, and not on the existence of a general method that allows the recovery of all deleted messages.
