British Prime MinisterAndy Burnham has announced his support for lifting the ban, in place since 1985, on alcoholic beverages in the stands of football stadiums in England and Wales.
Burnham, as quoted by Sky Sports, said the legislation dates back to a time when football was very different, adding that he sees "reasons to end this discrimination," arguing that continuing the ban imposes different treatment on football fans compared to fans of other sports.
In 1985, the government of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher imposed a ban on the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the stands of stadiums for matches of the top five divisions in England and Wales, amid escalating violence related to football at the time.
The Prime Minister's remarks were welcomed by the Football Supporters Association, which pointed to the success of trials that allowed the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the stands during some women's football matches.
In contrast, the football police unit warned against making any changes to the rules without adequate consultation with security agencies.
Police said their representatives were ready to meet with Burnham to explain the challenges the proposed changes might pose to the work of security services and the safety of fans and staff.
She added that football witnesses levels of violence and criminal behavior among fans that are not as prevalent in other sports, noting that alcohol often plays a role in violent behavior and brawls.
