European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned about the strengthening of political parties she said were "blind" to the threat from Russia, following the victory of the far-right Alternative for Germany party in regional elections.

Speaking alongside Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius during his visit to Lithuania, Kallas said that sabotage and other threats are now increasingly approaching Europe.
"At the same time, parties that are practically blind to this threat—and think we don't need to do anything because it's none of our business—are strengthening their positions," he said.
The AfD won about 44 percent of the vote in Sunday's election in Saxony-Anhalt, eastern Germany; that's more than double their share of the vote in the previous state election in 2021.
The party is far ahead of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the party led by Friedrich Merz, which only got around 17 percent of the vote.
However, the AfD failed to achieve the majority needed to form the first far-right-led state government in Germany since World War II.
"So, I'm afraid we're going to wake up in a situation where we haven't done enough to deter threats and defend ourselves," Kallas said.
"However, of course the German people themselves—as a democratic nation—must make their own choice," he added.
