Following Morocco's announcement, Mourinho enters the debate over the stadium that will host the 2030 World Cup final
Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho, manager of Real Madrid, has entered the fray in the escalating debate over which stadium will host the final match of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
FIFA had awarded Morocco, Spain and Portugal the honor of hosting the 2030 World Cup, in a tournament that will be co-organized by two countries from two different continents, Europe and Africa.
Mourinho's stance came after Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Moroccan Football Federation, announced that his country aims to host the 2030 World Cup final at the new "Hassan II" stadium, which is currently under construction.
Lekjaa’s statements sparked widespread reaction in Spain and Portugal, before Mourinho entered the fray during the press conference he held to talk about Real Madrid’s upcoming match against Rayo Vallecano in the Spanish League.
The 63-year-old Real Madrid manager was asked which stadium he would prefer to host the final, and whether he hoped the match would be held at the Santiago Bernabeu, the home ground of the Royal Club.
But Mourinho surprised everyone by choosing the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, confirming: "For me, as a Portuguese, I want the final to be held in Lisbon."
Real Madrid are preparing to face Rayo Vallecano on Saturday in the Spanish League, after starting their Champions League campaign with an exciting 2-1 victory over Inter Milan on Tuesday evening at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
