Instagram has recently expanded its use of AI tags and descriptions , automatically labeling images and content it suspects may have been created using AI. However, these tags appear to be making mistakes, describing real images as AI-generated and vice versa.

Although the platform labels real images as AI-generated, it leaves some content generated by the technology unlabeled.
The reason for this confusion in the platform's description mechanisms remains unknown so far, as the reasons that lead to the placement of artificial intelligence tags have varied.
One user reported in a post on Meta's Threads platform that the AI-generated mark appears when the image background is significantly removed using a tool, and another indicated that the mark appeared after he used the Canva platform.
This is not the first incident of its kind on the "Instagram" platform, as it happened previously in 2024 when the platform placed tags on many of its photographs.
Meta, the parent company of Instagram, justified the crisis at the time by saying that it examines images for IPTC and C2BA metadata, which prove with a reasonable degree of certainty whether an image was generated by artificial intelligence or not.
The Verge report explained that these labels were placed on images even if there was very little artificial intelligence intervention in them by smart tools such as various Adobe tools.
The crisis surrounding the new AI-generated tags on Instagram comes in the wake of its announcement of expanding its mechanisms for detecting influencer accounts that are entirely generated by artificial intelligence.
Instagram had previously announced that it would label AI-generated influencer accounts and limit their reach if the account did not disclose its nature.
