Internationalizing the Jordanian water security issue: How is Israel stealing the waters of the Yarmouk River?

In part of his recent speech at the United Nations General Assembly, King Abdullah II of Jordan highlighted the issue of the Kingdom’s water security in the face of Israel, and drew the attention of observers and politicians to the threat of confrontation when it comes to Jordanian national security on the northern borders.
The King said: “In the face of national and water security in the north of the Kingdom, we will not turn a blind eye to any threat, and Jordan will protect its security, water, and the interests of its people,” thus “putting the dots on the letters in all the details of the Jordanian position, which is in conflict with the Israeli right-wing program not only in Palestine, Gaza, and Jerusalem, but also in Syria and Lebanon,” as confirmed by former Deputy Prime Minister, Muhammad Halaika.

He added  that “the royal statements were clear and unambiguous, regarding the aspects related to Jordan’s view of its national and fundamental interests in the face of the realities that the Israelis are trying to impose on all countries in the region.”

The King's words were not couched in soft diplomacy, as evidenced by the fact that they upset the Israeli Foreign Ministry and prompted it to accuse Jordan by reminding it of some past events.

The King's words were not couched in soft diplomacy, as evidenced by the fact that they unsettled the Israeli Foreign Ministry, prompting it to accuse Jordan by reminding it of certain past events. His remarks also contained a direct allusion to "security" options in the context of defending Jordan's water security, particularly if the Israeli right-wing government resorts to the policy of depriving Jordanians of water, a policy it has previously implemented under the direct orders of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has refused for two years to renew a protocol concerning Jordan's water share from the Israeli side.

In his speech, the Jordanian monarch linked water security to national and border security, as Israel is trying to control water resources in southern Syria.

Jordanian sources speak of attempts by Israel and its army to impose a fait accompli there, in the vicinity of the Golan Heights, in a way that could later threaten Jordanian water security, referring to Jordan’s share of the Yarmouk River water, which was previously withheld by the regime of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and for which a high-level committee was formed between Jordan and Syria during the era of President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

Therefore, Jordan’s objection to the escalating Israeli military operations in southern Syria is not only out of concern for Syria’s sovereignty, but also out of concern that Jordan’s water security will not be affected by the control of extremist Israelis over the lands connected to southern Syria, especially since the Syrian side, after announcing the signing of the “Yarmouk water sharing” agreement, finds it difficult to commit to the Jordanians because of the impact of the Israeli military operations on a considerable number of springs and water sources in the Golan Valley basin, which forms the main outlet of the Yarmouk River.

On the contrary, the relevant committee on the Syrian side informed its Jordanian counterpart that some of the sites that feed the Yarmouk River are not only under the control of the Israeli army, but that it is also stealing and plundering groundwater in a huge number of small tributaries.

The Jordanian international water expert, Duraid Al-Mahasneh, was the first to warn that the Israeli side was seeking to control water sources and springs in the region and in the vicinity of Jordan through its expansionist military operations.

he pointed out that Israel's military operations in southern Lebanon and southern Syria have a deeper, more far-reaching objective: to control key water sources. According to Mahasneh, this serves as an early warning, as Israel, through this policy, seeks to exert maximum pressure on the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Expert: The Israeli side seeks to control water sources and wells in the region and around Jordan through its expansionist military operations.

According to Mahasneh and others, Israeli behavior undermines the Jordanian border, national and water security equation, and opens the door to a geopolitical siege related to the water issue.
