The Civil Defense an alert had been issued by the National Early Warning System for Emergencies, warning of a danger in the city of Mecca and the governorates of Taif, Jeddah, Yanbu, and the Tabuk region. However, it announced minutes later that these warnings had been lifted.
For its part, the Saudi-led coalition supporting the government in Yemen announced that its forces intercepted six ballistic missiles fired by the Iranian-backed Houthis on Thursday, saying it had thwarted attacks on the Saudi cities of Taif and Yanbu.
Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said in a series of posts on the “X” platform that “the escalation and violations of the Houthi militia will be dealt with firmly.”
In recent months, the Houthis have carried out several attacks on Saudi Arabia, which supports the internationally recognized Yemeni government.
Riyadh accused the Houthis last week of targeting Mecca with a drone that was shot down, an accusation the movement denied.
The Saudi capital, Riyadh, was also attacked on Saturday for the first time in years.
The Houthis, who already control a large part of Yemen, have recently extended their control over Yemen’s western coast on the Red Sea, strengthening their grip on the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, which connects Europe to Asia via the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.
This passage has become increasingly important to Saudi Arabia since Iran significantly disrupted shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz following the start of the US-Israeli war against it last February.
