The Indonesian Sawmill and Woodworking Association is utilizing the "Idola" method to boost the added value of the national wood processing industry by strengthening modification technology that can improve product quality and competitiveness.
ISWA Presidium Chairman Jimmy Chandra said the Idola method was developed as a wood modification technology approach to improve material characteristics, including strength, dimensional stability and biological resistance or durability .
The development of this innovation, he said in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Friday, was carried out through collaboration with the Bogor Agricultural Institute , the National Research.
According to him, the current challenge for the wood industry is no longer limited to producing raw materials, but rather how to process them into high-performance materials with greater economic value.
The sawnwood and processed wood industry, Jimmy continued, has a strategic position as a support for downstream industries, especially furniture and home components.
Plantation forest wood or community wood is also considered to have the potential to become a source of raw materials for the future because it can be developed sustainably.
However, he believes that plant wood still has limitations in terms of its natural properties. Therefore, wood modification technology can be used to improve the material's performance without altering its identity.
His team is also encouraging a shift in the way wood is viewed, from a mere commodity to a value-added material. Processing and innovation are considered crucial to ensure wood products compete not only on price but also on quality and performance.
This technological transformation is also related to the efficiency of raw material use, including through efforts to minimize waste or achieve zero waste .
From the downstream side, he said, improving wood performance through modification technology opens up opportunities for using the material for buildings, furniture, decking , molding, interiors, exteriors, and various other industrial products.
