The Ministry of Cooperatives together with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries are strengthening the synergy between the Merah Putih Village/Sub-district Cooperative and the Merah Putih Fishermen's Village to encourage improvements in the welfare of fishermen in Tongke-Tongke, Sinjai Regency, South Sulawesi.
"The integration of KDKMP and KNMP is necessary to strengthen the management and operation of fishing villages, while also avoiding duplication of facility development," said Cooperatives Minister Ferry Juliantoro on the sidelines of his working visit.
According to him, the existing infrastructure in the fishing village area can be optimized as a center for cooperative activities with the addition of necessary supporting facilities.
He stated that fishermen who join the cooperative will have easier access to financing and working capital to increase their business capacity. Therefore, his ministry is encouraging all fishermen in Tongke-Tongke to join as members or administrators of the KDKMP.
According to him, the synergy between KDKMP and KNMP will also strengthen the fishing business chain, from the absorption of catches to the marketing and processing of fishery products.
The fishermen's catch can later be absorbed by KDKMP to be marketed through the cooperative network or processed into derivative products so that they have added value and have the potential to increase fishermen's income.
"We will improve the fishermen's catch here, we will increase its quality, and we can even develop the capital needed by the fishermen," he said.
