Apple has released iOS 27 for iPhones, adding a range of features focused on improving everyday use, enhancing parental controls, and developing AI-powered photo editing tools.
The new system is compatible with iPhone 11 and later models, and includes internal improvements aimed at speeding up phone performance, including reducing the time required to run applications.
Some AI features require newer devices and are limited to the iPhone 16 series, as well as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple has also begun rolling out some of Siri's new capabilities on a trial basis, while the availability of several of these features to users in the European Union has been delayed due to local digital regulations and requirements.
Apple developed "Screen Time" tools to give parents greater control over the apps and content their children can access.
Parents can now choose which apps their children are allowed to use and set time limits based on categories such as games, entertainment, and social media. They can also create different schedules for school days and weekends, or completely disable device use at specific times, such as dinnertime.
One of the most notable additions is the "Ask to Browse" feature, which requires children to obtain parental permission before visiting new websites via Safari. Parents can approve requests through the Messages app or directly from the child's device.
Apple has also expanded its "Communications Safety" feature to include, in addition to images and videos containing nudity, content that includes bloody or violent scenes.
Apple has added a "Notify Me" feature to Safari, which allows the user to monitor specific web pages and receive an alert when a change occurs in them.
This feature can be used, for example, to track price drops or find out when a product will be back in stock. Users can specify the frequency of these checks, whether hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly.
Experiments have shown that the feature can detect changes such as the appearance of new headlines on news sites, but it does not always accurately identify the change that has occurred, and it does not currently allow for checking every few minutes.
The Photos app has received new AI-powered tools that allow you to change the perspective of the image, remove distracting elements, and expand the background beyond the boundaries of the original image.
The perspective-changing tool appears capable of producing realistic results in some cases, while the image enlargement tool struggles with fine details. In one experiment, the tool generated a distorted house number and altered the size of certain elements in the image, such as an electrical conduit and a gas meter box.
However, the results appeared better when used with images that had generic backgrounds, making these tools a practical new addition for users who want to edit their photos without the need for specialized applications.
