Bamboo shoots are gaining increasing attention as a low-calorie food option that can be easily added to meals to give them a crunchy texture and increase their fiber content.
Although long associated with Asian cuisine, bamboo shoots are not as widespread in many other cuisines around the world. They are often sold pre-packaged, making them easy to store and use in a variety of dishes, from stir-fries and soups to rice and egg dishes.
Nutritionist Julia Zumpano, from the Cleveland Clinic Digestive Disease Institute in Ohio, notes that bamboo shoots are low in calories, but provide fiber, minerals, and some vitamins.
These sprouts contain two types of fiber, soluble and insoluble, which may help support regular bowel movements and promote feelings of fullness. They also provide potassium, manganese, and copper, minerals that play important roles in various bodily functions.
Despite this nutritional value, Zumpano warns against treating bamboo shoots as a "superfood," noting that the available scientific evidence on their health benefits is still limited.
Some preliminary studies suggest that its consumption may be associated with potential benefits for heart and gut health, blood sugar control, and reduction of inflammation and oxidative stress, but these findings still need further human studies to be confirmed.
Canned sprouts are also convenient to use, requiring minimal preparation before being added to food, and they have a long shelf life. It is recommended to drain and rinse them before use to reduce the amount of brine.
However, the boiling and canning process may reduce some antioxidant compounds, according to Zombano, as some of these compounds dissolve in water, while others are affected by heat.
Bamboo shoots have a mild flavor and a crispy texture, making them suitable for a variety of dishes. They can be added to stir-fries with vegetables, soups and noodle dishes, mixed with rice or quinoa, or added to scrambled eggs and omelets.
Zumpano recommends consuming them along with sources of vitamin C, such as red peppers, broccoli, and lemons, to help improve the absorption of non-heme iron found in plant-based foods.
Thanks to their water and fiber content and low calorie count, bamboo shoots can add bulk to a meal without significantly increasing calories, which may help promote satiety. However, evidence regarding their direct role in weight loss remains limited.
Increasing fiber intake may not be suitable for everyone all at once, as it can cause digestive symptoms such as bloating and discomfort in some people.
Therefore, Zumpano recommends starting with a small amount, such as two tablespoons, and then gradually increasing the amount according to the body's tolerance, while making sure to drink enough water.
