OpenAI has acquired a startup specializing in smartphone cameras, in a deal valued at more than $300 million, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Speculation suggests that the company's technology will be used in the mysterious OpenAI device dubbed the "trillion-dollar product".
The acquired company, Glass Imaging, based in California, was founded by two former Apple employees, Zev Atar and Tom Bishop. The company says its AI-powered software boosts camera performance by up to 10 times.
Artificial intelligence works with the camera hardware to filter images from noise and blur and improve zoom quality.
The company says its "neural image signal processing" technology can "correct defects in lenses and sensors to deliver exceptional image quality, even in challenging conditions."
This acquisition comes amid speculation about an AI-powered device being developed by OpenAI in collaboration with renowned iPhone designer Jony Ive. The new device is expected to be unveiled next year, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has described it as "the most amazing piece of technology the world has ever seen."
In a promotional video last year, Ive said the device would help counteract some of the harmful effects of smartphones, adding: "Everything I've learned over 30 years has led me to this place and this moment. I'm absolutely certain that we're on the cusp of a new generation of technology that can make us a better version of ourselves."
Few details were provided about the mysterious device's appearance, but a leaked internal employee call following the promotional video offered some clues. Altman stated that it is not a wearable device, explaining that it will be fully aware of the user's surroundings and daily life, will be unobtrusive, and can be placed in a pocket or on a desk. He claimed it would increase OpenAI's value by a trillion dollars.
