Amid growing fears of human extinction at the hands of artificial intelligence, Elon Musk, during his virtual participation in the All-In Summit, presented a proposal to ensure the safety of advanced intelligent models.
The CEO of SpaceX called on leading artificial intelligence companies to test each other's models before launch, so that competitors can report any safety concerns.
Musk said during the summit held from September 13 to 15 in Los Angeles that this system could start immediately, adding: "All AI companies have a set of tests to see if a model will build biological or nuclear weapons or be deliberately deceptive. Each company applying the others' set of tests is probably the best we can do to ensure our safety."
He explained that instead of the company correcting its own obligations, it would have competitors correcting its obligations and raising the alarm when there are concerns.
Musk stressed the importance of including China in this framework to ensure its effectiveness, saying: "We should probably come to an agreement with China. It will be a peer review, where all the leading AI companies test each other's models before launch."
Musk believes the company should provide access to the application programming interface (API) in advance of the model's release, and if the company fails to resolve the issue, competitors could publicly voice their concerns, potentially exposing the company to enormous legal liability.
Speaking about safety, Musk said: "I think Anthropic pays more attention to its safety than OpenAI. But even Anthropic admits it is concerned about its models."
Musk's proposal comes in a broader context of growing calls to slow the pace of AI development, as he, along with Sam Altman, endorsed calls from Anthropic CEO Dario Amode to "slow down" development to allow enough time to keep up with safety measures.
