Images that spread across social media and were modified using artificial intelligence provoked the ire of French star Kylian Mbappe, who expressed his anger at being compared to dictators who previously ruled their countries. By
AI-generated images showed the French national team captain alongside dictators, most notably the Soviet Joseph Stalin and the Congolese Mobutu Sese Seko, dictator of the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire).
In an interview with the international magazine "France Football", which will be published in full, Mbappe said : "It's somewhat funny. It seems to some to be just a joke, but there is another side that is less funny in this regard because we realize the extent of the damage that such people have caused throughout history."
He added: "Comparing me to people who kill others or cause the unhappiness of millions, I don't think I've ever done anything like that in my life, so it's a mix of emotions."
He continued: "On the one hand, I realize that it is just a joke and does not carry a serious character, but sometimes it reveals a lack of political and human awareness among people."
Mbappe revealed that Ousmane Dembele used to jokingly call him "Mobutu" in reference to the dictator who ruled Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) for 25 years.
Regarding that, Mbappe said: "With Dembele it's different. He picked up the nickname from social media. He's just joking with me about it, nothing more."
