Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho insisted his team did not deserve to lose to Real Betis despite their defeat in the third round of the Spanish league.
Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho suffered his first defeat of the season during his second stint as Real Madrid manager, in a match that saw him protest against the refereeing and receive his first yellow card.
Mourinho spoke about Real Madrid's level and said: "I think the team played a great match. Sometimes you lose without knowing why. It doesn't explain why we completely controlled the game thanks to two strong central defenders who controlled everything, and the many attacks and numerous opportunities. If the match had ended in a draw, we would have felt frustrated. Imagine how we would have felt from defeat."
Mourinho addressed the changes he made during the match, stressing that they were not due to his dissatisfaction with the players' level, saying: "The team has always performed well. Betis launched some counter-attacks, as usual, but the match belonged to Real Madrid."
Regarding the performance of referee Hernandez Hernandez, Mourinho confirmed: "I don't know why I got the yellow card, but it wasn't bad. I got up because one of the Betis players looked like he was in a critical condition, but I can't comment on the penalty kick and the disallowed goal. I didn't see it and I can't say anything."
