The HYROX Beijing race in China witnessed an unusual incident that sparked widespread controversy after Australian athlete Joanna Witzrick suffered a sudden accident related to loss of bowel control during the competition.
According to media reports, Witzrick, 22, continued competing despite the visible effects of the accident on her clothes and legs, before moving on to a number of race stations that included rowing, ski pushing and jumping exercises.
Wetzrick did not stop competing, but finished the race in first place with a time of one hour, one minute and 23 seconds, adding a new victory to her record, after she had achieved the world record for the professional women’s category in the HYROX race with a time of 54:25 in Warsaw last April.
But her continued participation in the race caused a great deal of controversy on social media, especially with the circulation of videos and photos showing the effects of the accident on parts of the competition track and some equipment, which led followers to question the safety and hygiene procedures during the race.
On the other hand, some defended the athlete, considering what happened to be a sudden health incident, and praised her determination to complete the competition despite the difficult circumstances.
For its part, HYROX China confirmed that it had taken measures to deal with the incident, explaining that the affected areas and tracks were isolated and closed, and that a comprehensive disinfection process was carried out on them, while the damaged equipment was removed from the competition site.
It also announced the replacement of the flooring and a deep sterilization of the facility after the competitions concluded.
The incident sparked a wider debate about how to deal with sudden health incidents during endurance competitions, and whether current rules provide clear procedures to protect other participants in such cases.
It is worth noting that HYROX combines running with a range of strength and endurance exercises, and Wetzrick is one of its most prominent competitors, as she tops the women's professional rankings, according to HYROX results data.
