Belarusian media reported that hockey referee Alexei Gavrylenok, 38, was arrested on suspicion of murdering Tatyana Marchenko, a 43-year-old pregnant woman from Minsk.
According to the Tribuna website, Marchenko disappeared on September 8, before her daughter filed a report with the police two days after the crime occurred.
The authorities were able to identify and arrest the suspect within 24 hours, and a criminal case was opened against him.
According to the Belarusian Interior Ministry, Gavrilenok admitted to having a romantic relationship with the victim and that he knew she was pregnant with his child, despite being officially in another relationship, which led to frequent disagreements between them.
During a new altercation, the suspect, according to the investigation, stabbed the woman several times, before placing her body inside a suitcase and transporting it out of the city, then burying it in a forest in the Minsk region.
The investigation indicated that he had purchased a shovel from a store before moving the body.
According to authorities, the suspect also disposed of several pieces of evidence, including blood-stained clothing and the victim's mobile phone, and attempted to remove traces of the crime from the apartment where the incident occurred.
Alexei Gavrylenok is the son of former Belarusian national team goalkeeper Alexander Gavrylenok. The suspect previously represented Belarus at youth levels and played for his country's under-20 team in the 2006-2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
At the club level, Gavrilynouk played for Brest between 2008 and 2015, before ending his playing career and moving into refereeing.
His father, Alexander Gavrylenok, a former goalkeeper, represented Belarus between 1992 and 1999, playing 17 international matches during which he conceded 39 goals.
