According to the agency's press office, animal saliva may contain the rabies virus. Therefore, in case of a bite, the wound should be washed immediately, treated with an antiseptic solution, and the person should go to the emergency room immediately.

The statement from the office reads: “If a person comes into contact with a sick or aggressive animal, they must act immediately, washing the bite or saliva contact site with soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Then, the wound should be treated with hydrogen peroxide, and its edges treated with 5% iodine tincture, while going to the emergency department immediately.”

A source at the agency indicated that receiving prompt medical care contributes to preventing rabies in humans. The earlier rabies vaccination begins, the faster immunity develops, which helps prevent the disease.

The source said: "The rabies vaccination is free. The vaccine is given into the shoulder muscle on the day of treatment, then on the third, seventh, fourteenth, thirtieth and ninetieth days after exposure to the bite. Alcohol must be avoided during the treatment period."

According to the agency, animals that can transmit rabies include wild animals such as foxes, wolves, raccoon dogs, and bats, as well as domestic and farm animals such as dogs, cats, and cattle. These animals are major vectors of rabies, and hedgehogs and squirrels can also pose a risk.

It should be noted that the rabies virus can remain in the saliva of an infected animal for up to 10 days before symptoms appear. Transmission to humans is primarily through a bite, but it can also occur through contact with broken skin or mucous membranes.

To protect against rabies, avoid contact with wild animals, even if they appear healthy and friendly. Any change in a pet's behavior, such as aggression, hydrophobia, refusal to eat, or a desire to hide, requires immediate isolation and consultation with a veterinarian.
