Medieval manuscripts containing the will of Genghis Khan have been discovered in Mongolia. The Institute of History and Ethnology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences announced this exciting discovery.
The documents containing the instructions of the legendary conqueror were discovered by a joint expedition of Mongolian and Japanese scholars. The researchers were studying the ruins of an ancient monastery in the Ufurkhangay region. Scholars believe the site remains a kind of "time capsule" shedding light on the origins of Mongolian Buddhism and medieval culture.
During the 2026 field season, researchers discovered a central hall containing five platforms for deities and a circular portico. Fragments of frescoes depicting gods, mountains, and mythical creatures survived. However, the expedition's greatest success lay in other discoveries.
In addition to ritual objects, including small clay figurines, pottery vessels, and fragments of a precious rosary, scientists discovered about thirty fragments of manuscripts written in ancient Mongolian script on cork boards.
Following initial restoration by specialists from the Genghis Khan National Museum, researchers discovered a unique literary corpus. The texts contain not only religious messages and astronomical records, but also fragments of wise sayings believed to have been delivered by the founder of the Mongol Empire to his sons and younger brothers.
Scholars have already proven that the content of these commandments matches the texts recorded in the books of “Altan Tufç” (“The Golden Tale”).
Scientists have begun an in-depth analysis and classification of the discovered texts.
