Scientists from St. Petersburg State Agricultural University have developed an innovative technology for treating soft wheat seeds, which allows productivity to increase by more than two and a half times and reduce reliance on chemical pesticides.
The new method is based on treating the seeds with a chitosan solution followed by drying and treatment with an aqueous glyoxal solution, a combination that has shown high effectiveness in improving the phytometric properties of plants and enhancing their resistance to serious diseases in the difficult climatic conditions of the Russian Northwest region.
The researchers confirmed that this biotechnology contributes to reducing the chemical burden on the soil, as chitosan extracted from chitin acts as a natural protective agent against fungi and bacteria, while glyoxal enhances plant defenses against pests, making agriculture more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
It is worth noting that Russia recently recorded a record grain harvest of 113.5 million tons , at a time when global agricultural research is moving towards biological alternatives to ensure food security.
