An unprecedented geological change is reshaping planet Earth. Melting ice is pushing the poles up and the equator down in a transformation that is accelerating the Earth's approach to the perfect spherical shape.
A recent geological study has revealed that the Earth is undergoing an accelerating transformation in its geometric shape, with the polar regions rising at a noticeable rate while the equatorial regions are sinking, making the solid Earth crust less flat and closer to the ideal spherical shape, as a direct result of the melting ice that redistributes the planet’s mass and changes its physical balance.
Satellite data revealed that the rate of polar uplift doubled in just two decades, rising from 0.5 millimeters per year between 1997 and 2000 to 1 millimeter per year by 2015. In contrast, the area surrounding the equator is experiencing gradual subsidence due to the transfer of meltwater and increased pressure on the lithosphere there. This means that the geometric difference between the diameter of the equator and the diameter of the poles is constantly shrinking, making the solid Earth more rounded, while the gravitational shape of the planet's geoid becomes flatter and more bulging as a result of the gravitational field's response to the migrating water masses towards lower latitudes.
It is worth noting that the Earth was never a perfect sphere, but was flattened at the poles and bulging at the equator due to the centrifugal force resulting from its rotation around its axis. This natural distortion was relatively constant throughout previous geological eras before human and climatic factors intervened to accelerate the current morphological change in an unprecedented manner.
